Welcome to the Yooper Ring! This ring is for those of us who are born and bred Yoopers, and for those who wish to be a Yooper. No, you don't have to know what a Yooper is, but it might help.
What is a Yooper, you ask?
Well, a Yooper is someone who lives in Da UP, eh?! Still
confused?
Then perhaps you should check out Kathe's
Cyber Culture and read the Yooper Creation Story.
Okay, okay......so that page takes a while to load. I guess I'll tell ya what a Yooper is.
A Yooper is someone who lives in the Upper
Peninsula (UP) of Michigan.
Where's that, you say? Well, it's the land mass above the 'hand'
of Michigan,
between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.....yes, that's
it.....the one way up
there in the frozen tundra. No, we're not part of Canada, nor are
we part of Wisconsin.
Okay, so now that you know what a Yooper
is.....you're probably wondering
why a Yooper Ring.....are there really that many Yoopers
online?????
Well, yes and no......most Yoopers I've encountered are those who
have escaped to the 'real world'.
(They were either very lucky.....or extremely smart (er..I mean
stupid)!)
But this ring was created as a way to allow all of my friends to
become Honorary Yoopers.
The requirements of being a Yooper must be taken very
seriously....
(come on......it's not everyday that you're able to call yourself
a Yooper now, right?)
Huntin', fishin', chewin' tobacco, listenin' to Da Yoopers (that's a local band), goin' to Da Yooper's Tourist Trap (owned by band members), drivin' a rusty Chevrolet out in da boondocks (aka: boondocking, 4-wheeling, 2-tracking, mucking, etc.), and most importantly.......drinking beer at all ungodly times of the day.
As for language, well, that's a little tricky.....it's not something I can teach you, but if you hang around a real Yooper long enough you'll pick it up quickly. Let's just say it includes ending sentences in the word 'eh' alot.....but not like the Canadian 'eh'.......for example, you might say something like this:
Say ya to da UP, eh? (this is actually on a bumper sticker!).....or........Ya, you betcha, eh?
I think you get the idea. If not, I've been told (although I've not seen the movie myself yet) that the people in the movie, Fargo, speak alot like us Yoopers......OH! that's another saying.... In the Southern U.S., you hear alot of "All y'all...." well, here in da UP, it's "Yous guys"
You're truly a Yooper? Get outta here! No way! Well, since you're proud enough to admit it, you may copy this graphic to display on your webpage......that is, if you would like.
Just copy this code into your HTML document:

Just copy this code into your HTML document:
